Brass Company trip to RBC

On Wednesday, 19 March, just one week out from the infamous annual Big Brass Concert, Brass Company visited the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) for a very exciting musical collaboration.
On this occasion, Brass Company were firstly treated to a live performance in the prestigious Bradshaw Hall from the RBC Brass Band, which was just inspirational and a powerful way to commence the workshop. Warwick pupils then had the fabulous opportunity to sit and play side-by side with the RBC students. This was a fun, engaging and hugely beneficial workshop, rehearsing some challenging repertoire which will later be performed at The Big Brass Concert 2025 on Thursday, 27 March. Brass Company were put through their paces under the baton of Ian Porthouse (Head of Brass Band Studies @ RBC) who is regarded as one of the leading Brass Band musical directors, conducting the likes of Tredegar Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. Overall, a brilliant session and lots of useful concepts to take on board and implement accordingly.
This workshop was then followed by a Performance Masterclass which presented a platform for four Warwick boys to deliver some solo repertoire and receive specialist feedback from Edward Jones (Head of Brass @ RBC). Chris (Year 13) delivered a stunning rendition of the virtuoso showpiece - Alexander Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto in Ab Major. George (Year 13) followed this beautifully with a lyrical and melodic version of Casterede ‘Sonatine for Trombone’ (2nd Mvt.). Next up was Edward (Year 12) who showcased his creative and technical mastery performing the 3rd Mvt. from the renowned Hummel Trumpet Concerto. Finally, Seb (Year 12) stepped up to play Jorgensen’s ‘Romance’ displaying contrasting versions of a repetitive melody in a tender and fresh way, whilst expressing a lovely emotional atmosphere.
This trip was an incredible occasion which enabled every single member of Brass Company to depart feeling inspired and motivated, knowing that they have enormously benefited from the overall visit. In turn, taking this ensemble from strength to strength and creating a real exciting buzz around the department ahead of next week’s concert.
A big thanks to Edward Jones, Ian Porthouse and all the RBC students for being so welcoming to Warwick students and providing them with a superb musical experience. Brass Company acquitted themselves brilliantly and were a credit to the school showcasing the sheer quality of talent on offer. Finally, thank you to Mr Tibbitts for leading and organising this trip and to Mr Mann and Mr Lindsay for their time and expertise in attending.
