Music
Our belief at Warwick School is that music has the power to enrich everyone’s life. Our ambition as a Music Department is to instil and develop a love of music in our pupils, in an atmosphere that fosters excellence through enjoyment.
Whether a boy joining the school is a highly experienced musician, or has never played in or sung with a group before, we have opportunities for every boy to thrive and have music a meaningful part, large or small, of their life at school and in the wider world.
Excellence in learning and teaching
We are lucky to have a team of over 40 music teachers, all professionals who are highly trained and excellent educational and instrumental practitioners, to cater for a whole variety of instruments across genres, whether classical, rock, pop or jazz. Our Heads of Section have the specific remit of ensuring that boys are encouraged and given opportunities to perform and develop in a thriving annual concert schedule. We have a track record of success within and beyond the school gates, whether that be ABRSM/Trinity/Rock School exams, Pro Corda and NCBF competitions, GCSE / A Level results, performances at prestigious venues around the country, participation in the National Youth Orchestra, or students being awarded places at Oxbridge, Russell Group Universities and Music Conservatoires for Further Education.
The Music School is well-resourced, with a sound-proofed Music Studio, Recital Room, 20 practice rooms fully equipped with pianos, a suite of computers with music software and enough instruments to give one to every boy in Year 7, with more to spare! Warwick Hall is a professional on-site venue for our biggest concerts, with other purpose-built recital halls for smaller concerts and the Bridge House Theatre for musical productions. Our relationship with Orchestra of the Swan, Warwick - A Singing Town and our partnerships with local schools provide particularly excellent and unique opportunities for our pupils to thrive and be inspired. Music Scholars form a pivotal component of Warwick School’s Music Department, and we proudly offer music scholarships for pupils in Year 7, Year 9, and Sixth Form.
Music really is for everyone at Warwick, and we are confident your boy will be inspired by and feel welcomed to the department.
My experience studying music at Warwick School has been nothing short of amazing. I have felt inspired by the teaching staff and by my peers, and truly believe our school’s facilities make it one of the best-equipped institutions for the study of music."
Exceptional support for advanced musicians
We are proud to be a centre of excellence, offering tuition of the highest standard and a wide variety of outstanding orchestras, bands and choirs to suit all ages, styles and abilities. Pupils are encouraged to fulfil their academic and musical potential; a gift they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. Many achieve Grade 8 with Distinction and gain a Diploma in Music Performance.
We have numerous solo performance opportunities for music award holders, our most promising musicians, working closely with our dedicated and accomplished Head of Scholars. Our Advanced Musicianship Programme explores a huge range of advanced musical topics, supporting potential Further Education and career pathways in music.
A fun introduction to performance for all
There are so many opportunities for pupils to get involved with music from their first year at Warwick. We have a huge range of ensembles, groups, and musical styles, incorporating classical and film music, choirs, chamber ensembles, large and small jazz groups, rock and pop bands.
At Warwick our pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of outstanding, imaginative and ambitious concerts, both formal and informal, for soloists and ensembles.
As part of our amazing Year 7 Music Scheme, every Year 7 pupil learns a new instrument and forms a part of the 120-strong Year 7 Symphony Orchestra.
As someone who plays multiple instruments, my weeks can be filled with a variety of music-making. For example, on a Monday afternoon, I could be in an orchestra with lots of other boys and girls; on Wednesday, I could be in the studio singing with my rock band; and then on Fridays, I could be playing with my flute quintet. So, really, what I love is that every day is a new part of music - and the fact that I can experience and make all these types of music in one place is truly wonderful and an experience that I wouldn't get anywhere else."
