Year 7 Music Scheme Summer Concert

At the start of every new academic year, all Year 7 boys are enrolled onto Warwick School’s unique musical programme known as the ‘Year 7 Music Scheme’. This really is an incredible opportunity which enables every pupil to explore and study an orchestral instrument for a year.

Weekly sessions (one 50-minute period) consist of specialist instrumental tuition whereby the students improve their instrumental techniques, classroom-based learning covering a range of music theory, aural skills and notation, and finally class band which allows the boys to make music together in a fun environment, improving their ensemble and overall musicianship skills.

Studies have also proven that playing a musical instrument can be a fun, engaging and an interactive way of learning music. It helps strengthen our brain functions and cognitive abilities which in the long run can assist towards improving GCSE and A Level results. Wider benefits also include cultivating creativity, time management, building confidence, social skills, reducing stress and having a sense of achievement.

On Tuesday 25th June, Warwick Hall hosted 134 Year 7 boys to showcase their musical talents and what they have achieved throughout the academic year. The concert commenced with the full orchestra performing Rock Anthems which was a medley of three iconic hits. This was a thrilling piece which sounded fantastic and ensured the concert started off with a bang. Other full orchestral items included ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, ‘Imperial March’ from Star Wars, and ‘Mars’, the challenging first movement from Gustav Holst’s ‘Planets Suite’.

Also performing on the night were representatives of our Musicianship programme. This course is led by Miss Read and is designed for the most advanced and experienced boys who already played a musical instrument prior to joining in Year 7. This year’s cohort consisted of 28 pupils, of which many are currently working towards grades 6, 7 and 8. This is extremely promising for the future of the music department. 7L performed an Eminem classic, ‘Love The Way You Lie’, with 7G treating the audience to ‘Kids’ by MGMT. 7B, O, T & Y all showcased new talents together forming a percussion ensemble playing Funkytown.

Finally, each instrumental family had the opportunity to demonstrate one song as an orchestral section, presenting Feeling Good (Strings), Born To Be Wild (Brass) and Vivaldi: Spring (Woodwind). All families delivered excellent, mature performances with lots of energy and confidence.

A big thanks go to Mr Tibbitts, Mrs Robertson, Mr Clarke Butler and all the music scheme staff for their dedication and inspiration throughout the academic year. It has been such a pleasure to witness the boys’ instrumental journeys flourish and we look forward to seeing where this wonderful opportunity will take them musically into Year 8 and beyond.
