Tennis update
On Saturday our 1st and 2nd Tennis teams enjoyed their first fixture in almost two years in a baptism of fire against one of the top tennis schools in the country, Repton.
Despite coming out second best it was a wonderful event and a reminder of the value of competitive school sport. Highlights included Scott Rudge forcing a tie-break in his singles match and William Barnes making his debut for the 1st team.
While all players initially struggled with the pace and bounce of the hard courts, they then rallied and in almost all circumstances made great comebacks in their singles matches. The doubles matches were even more competitive and to their credit Warwick’s 1st Team won two out of three matches despite having lost all singles matches. This all bodes very well for future matches where doubles will be the order of the day.
The 2nd Team also had a wonderful, competitive fixture where a great deal of quality doubles was played. However in a game of fine margins Warwick could not quite match Repton’s consistency. Future doubles practice and tactics will surely pay off in the future for this young team. A great highlight was Tom Quinn and Raphael Forsythe competing and winning a match despite being the designated third seeded pair on the day.
Boys all went home with smiles on their faces though as the last match of the day went down to the wire. Wiley veterans Alex Butt and Alex Didlick came through a testing doubles match to win a tense tie-break, much to the gathered crowd’s disappointment and to Warwick’s delight.
