Psychology and volunteering
This week Sixth Form students welcomed the inspirational Gregory Weston for an after school talk on his recovery from a traumatic brain injury.
Kissing it better volunteers, Psychology students and those aspiring to study Medicine were all captivated by Gregory’s story. From being in a coma and doctors saying he would never walk again, to climbing Mount Snowdon a few years later after undergoing cutting edge neuro-rehabilitation.
Lower Sixth Psychology student Vijay Mehta said about the experience:
“I was very much intrigued and fascinated by Gregory's story from the injury itself, to the recovery process to where he is today. I especially found the determination he had inspiring as he trusted the recovery process and the various psychologists and physiotherapists to help him through the recovery of moving his left side again”.
Thurwaaragan Vivekananthan added “the key message I took from the talk was that drive and optimism will and can keep you going in any situation. It was through his perseverance that he was able to prove the medical team wrong about never walking again. Mr Weston's experience with volunteering giving him a purpose resonates with me, as a 'Kissing it Better' volunteer I genuinely feel a sense of accomplishment and pride when I am able to put smiles on the faces of patients in hospital.”
We are now in contact with the Leamington Rehab Hospital who are looking for volunteers to help with the movement class that Gregory with patients on a Saturday morning. More details about this fantastic opportunity will be sent out in due course and we very much look forward to welcoming Gregory to Warwick School again in the future.
