Warwick are runners up in London Table Tennis Academy
On Sunday, the U16 table tennis team competed in the national final - a round-robin event with the top four teams in the country.
The team of Starry, Rex, Toby and Yannic started well, going into a 3-0 lead against Reading School, before being pegged back to 4-4. We continued with a comprehensive 6-2 victory against St Mary's College Liverpool. With London table tennis academy also winning their first two matches, it left all to play for in what was effectively the final.
Starry played his best match of the day to win the first match convincingly and Rex had an incredibly hard-fought battle against the opposing number one player, eventually coming out on top 11-9 in a nerve-racking fifth set. The depth of the academy team began to show however, as despite Toby and Yannic fighting hard and winning sets, the more experienced opposition proved too strong and we finished with another 4-4 draw - not quite enough for overall victory.
We finished runners-up, an incredible achievement when considering the winning team have 15 hours of table tennis coaching as part of their school week! However, with all four members of the team eligible to compete in the same age category, we look forward to putting things right next year!
