Mr Bond's week in review - 31 January
In Monday’s assembly, Mr Burchett asked some of the boys to re-create a scene from one of his favourite films, 'The Replacements'. In this American Football comedy, the replacement players were asked to admit their fears to the rest of the team. The players spoke about spiders and bees - not exactly what the coach was hoping for. In the end the quarterback speaks up and talks about quicksand. He said, "You try to fight back, but the harder you fight, the deeper you sink. Until you can't move... you can't breathe...because you're in over your head. Like quicksand."
Mr Burchett linked this to how we might feel in school when a day starts off really well but then one thing happens, and then another, and before you know it you are sinking in your own type of quicksand. Often, the only way to get out of your quicksand is with the help of others which links to our current learning strength, empathy. Showing empathy is the best way to help others overcome their fears. The assembly finished with Mr Burchett overcoming his own fear of 'writing on a whiteboard'. The boys showed their empathy by helping Mr Burchett with some spelling and grammar, as well as not laughing at some questionable handwriting!
On Wednesday this week, the Assembly Hall turned into the Globe Theatre for a day as we were visited by the Young Shakespeare Company. Year 5 and Year 6 took part in workshops based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the boys had great fun taking part in this very interactive experience which brought one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays to life.
On the sports front, the boys had a very busy week with football, hockey and swimming fixtures while seven boys also took part in the first round of the Pro Corda Chamber music festival.
Today, the school took part in the Ventis House Charity Day in support of Myton Hospice. Based around the theme of butterflies – the symbol of the hospice – the boys had a lot of fun taking part in a range of money raising games and activities.
With best wishes for the weekend,
John Bond
