The delay to Step 4 of the Government’s ‘roadmap out of lockdown’ has meant a quieter end to the school year than we had all hoped, but as another extraordinary school year draws to a close I do not want to dwell on the challenges, but rather to focus on the achievements of the past term.
2 June 2021, you are 27 years old and having been sacked by Yorkshire in 2014 for ‘unprofessional behaviour’, and subsequently failing to secure a contract at Hampshire you have just played your first day of test cricket at Lord's and taken your first test wicket. This should be a day of celebration.
Every day I spend forty minutes, each way, commuting to and from Warwick School. Initially I viewed this commute negatively, as a waste of my time, time that would be better spent either at school or at home with my family. Both these things are still true, but I have come to enjoy the commute rather than merely tolerating it.
One of the values we seek to foster as part of the Warwick Way is Curiosity, but exactly what is curiosity and why is it so valuable.
Saturday 24 April was a great day. The sun was out, it felt like summer was on its way and for the first time in over a year I watched Warwick School boys playing competitive sport, it truly felt like the beginning of the return to normal.
As the first full week of the Summer Term draws to a close, I write this blog looking forward to tomorrow and watching Warwick School boys playing competitive sport against another school for the first time in over a year. Consequently, even though for now at least, most day-to-day arrangements remain the same, I am filled with optimism that the coming weeks will bring a gradual return to normal.

It has been a real pleasure to welcome the boys back to school this week. It has also been fantastic to see them laughing and enjoying each other’s company once again.
We have worked hard to keep things as normal as possible, to offer the full curriculum along with a broad and high-quality programme of co-curricular activities.
Today another half-term of remote schooling comes to an end. The entire school community can be extremely proud of what has been achieved over the past five and a half weeks.
In last Thursday’s start of term assembly, I encouraged the boys to search for the silver lining to the cloud of lockdown. In this week’s assembly I spoke about the joy and value of reading.
Christmas is coming. As we near the end of what has been a uniquely challenging term, even though this Christmas may be slightly different, it is with great joy that I write these words!
